It’s official - on September 12th, 2014 the Harper Government quietly ratified the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) by a Cabinet vote. This treaty is bad for Canada, bad for climate and bad for democracy, and comes after two years of protests and misgivings from Canadians and Members of Parliament alike.

Through a process known as an investor-state tribunal, FIPA allows state-owned Chinese investors to sue Canada for any government action that could impede their capacity to make a profit. These suits are decided in secret tribunals, and the decisions apply not only to the federal government, but also to provincial and municipal governments and First Nations.

Elizabeth May has been an outspoken critic of Canada’s loss of sovereignty implicit in FIPA since the treaty was first signed in September 201, and supported the Hupacasath First Nation’s legal challenge.

We need more MPs like Elizabeth who speak honestly and openly with Canadians and stand up for us in the House of Commons.
