No Tankers, No Pipelines

The proposed growth in pipelines and tankers is to serve only one purpose: to support Stephen Harper’s plan to increase oil sands production to 6 million barrels per day (mbd). At Copenhagen, Canada promised to reduce CO2 emissions from our 2005 level of 737 megatons (MT) to 607 MT by 2020. Under Harper’s reign our emissions are on track to be 734 MT -- all progress on emission reduction at provincial levels is being wiped out by oil sands growth.

We oppose all of the proposed pipeline expansion, including Keystone XL. They put our planet in peril, prevent us from making the changes we need to make to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to an acceptable level, and divert resources to join the innovation in green, clean energy.

Lend your voice to help put a stop to reckless fossil fuel infrastructure expansion.

Act now -- Sign this petition and add your name to the thousands of other Canadians who have told the Harper Administration that more pipelines and tankers are not in our economic or environmental interest.

Refining in Canada is a must. Much safer when spills occur and keeps jobs here.

Canada’s energy policy has been very short sighted. Putting all our energy output into fossil fuels in total disregard for the obvious impact of Climate Change has set Canada far behind other nations in developing green energy alternatives. Our present government has been a mill-stone instead of a leader in coping with our very real needs for sustainability.

The determination to keep producing the dirtiest oil on the planet from Alberta’s tar sands, and sending it, unrefined, to our competitors so they can sell us their products makes no sense. Our resources should at least be used here for our own industry and employment.

The Pacific coast is far too valuable to be put at risk of oil spills or chemical spills. The Exxon Valdes spill in Prince William Sound 25 years ago still impacts that area with continuing harm to fish and wildlife. And take note, Exxon, instead of paying for court awarded damages continued to spend their money on appeals. This is the kind of irresponsible attitude we would also be faced with .We can not afford this. Taxpayers can not afford this kind of loss. We can’t begin to pay what it will cost if one of those immense tankers grounds, or a pipeline ruptures.

The recent change in oil prices is evidence of the world having moved ahead and left Canada behind. The sooner we are focused on clean energy and sustainability the better.

Our environment should not be compromised and polluted by our greed for fossil fluid.

Sooke Voted overwhelmingly “NO MORE TANKERS”! Now we need all coastal communities to take the same action! Then all BC Communities… then ensure that no Conservative MP’s misrepresent our province… WE CAN DO IT!

It is time to start investing in the new economy. The time for investing in the carbon economy is over.
