We need to pull together (July 25, 2021)

Good Sunday Morning!

Having left you last Sunday with news of wildfires around John’s farm in Ashcroft, I will start with the update. He is home safe, but it was scary and near thing for him to see the flames along the ridge across the Thompson River so close to his place. Having secured drip hoses, fire hoses and sprinklers in strategic locations, he had called at 9 pm Tuesday to say he did not see flames and it was just smoky.

An Ear-Splitting Siren (July 18, 2021)

Good Sunday Morning!

All I can think of this morning is the climate emergency.  Tomorrow morning, John will take the earliest ferry to head to his farm in Ashcroft – now under evacuation alert.  His daughter who has been living there is still in Vancouver recovering from heat stroke after being in the 50 degree C record-smashing temperatures at end of June.

Treaty 8 (July 4, 2021)

Good Sunday Morning!

A good morning wish on the famous flag-waving Fourth of July for our neighbours to the south.  Another nation born of theft of indigenous lands, the Doctrine of Discovery, with the added dollop of “manifest destiny.”

A serious reckoning is spreading well beyond our borders. Statues are being toppled, not only in Canada, but throughout the continent. Tributes to Spanish conquistadors, Queen Isabella, and Christopher Columbus are falling.

Heat Dome (June 27, 2021)

Good Sunday Morning!

We are in a climate emergency and it really hits home. Home. As in my husband’s home of longstanding – his farm in Ashcroft, B.C.  Ashcroft is in the range of Canada’s only true desert. It gets hot. The kids live there now, but news of advancing temperatures of incredible heat, even for Ashcroft, of 47 degrees, happening to hit when the irrigation system is down with a broken pump and wobbly electricity, is an emergency at many levels. John has to get there.  With me laid up and never so dependent on someone looking after me.  He keeps saying “This is the pointy edge of global heating. Maybe it is time to sell.”  Climate emergency.

Time for mutual care (June 20, 2021)

I’m Cate, Elizabeth’s daughter, excited to have an opportunity to write my mom’s usual column this Sunday. She is out of commission for a couple weeks, because she had a knee replacement surgery on Wednesday!

As all of you know, this has been a very hard week for the Green Party of Canada. I cannot remember a worse moment for us.

So Many Places (June 6, 2021)

Good Sunday Morning! My head is in so many places all at once. I know some regular readers will want updates on Fairy Creek, but I am still in the midst of C-12 (Climate Accountability Act) amendments, and then there’s TMX news, and World Environment Day – and we are reeling from the mass grave in Kamloops and the anniversary of the report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit peoples… and the first anniversary of the killing of Chantel Moore (June 4th). And I have been working on all of the above- all week. Read more

RCMP and Bill C-12 (May 30, 2021)

Good Sunday Morning!

The last Sunday in May. Let’s hope that we are entering a month with more opportunities to see each other – safely.  I still worry that the risks are high of too many people feeling liberated from COVID – too soon. Be careful. Stay safe.
