Mourners encouraged to take part in day of prayer on Sunday following discovery of Tk'emlups remains

Day of prayer for Tk'emlups

Mourners are being encouraged to take part in a national day of prayer this weekend in honour of the remains found on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir said the band is encouraging anyone who wants to take part to join in prayer at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

“Some actions for people to consider would be truly honouring the children,” Casimir said.

Shuswap Nation Tribal Council Chief Wayne Christian is encouraging British Columbians to take part.

“The current depth and level of trauma being experienced by the survivors their families, community members and leadership are numbing,” he said.

“We urge all communities to take care of your survivors, families and yourselves as work down this healing path begins.”

Casimir announced last week that ground-penetrating radar surveys had located the remains of 215 children on the grounds of the former residential school. The band hopes to have a report detailing its findings made public by the end of the month.
