Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • The goal is to limit global warming to below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels, as established through the Paris Agreement;
  • The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2018 special report warns of extreme weather and dire living conditions if global warming exceeds 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels;
  • The Government of Canada’s current targets for reducing green house gas emissions fall far short of its commitment under the Paris Agreement, including the absence of a target for the year 2025 and by allowing continued emissions through offset mechanisms in its 2050 target to reach ''net zero'';
  • Government targets are not based on objective, scientific information; and
  • The federal government emissions-reporting plan fails to address unreservedly the urgency of the climate crisis by delaying the accountability period to 2030.
We, the undersigned, your petitioners, call upon the Government of Canada to increase emissions reductions ensuring that our country will meet the Paris Agreement targets and to make sure that the advisory body created to provide the Minister of Environment with advice with respect to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 be comprised exclusively of scientific experts.
